Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence

Mindfulness: A mental practice achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and physical feelings.

Why mindfulness?

In this global, digital age we are faced with a dilemma. The potential for innovation, creativity and collaboration have never been greater. Yet the accompanying pace, complexity and challenge these times bring means that many, especially leaders, feel ill-equipped to realise this potential. Too often work demands result in depleted life-force energy, burn-out and disengagement and experiencing life in a constant state of survival. The antidote to this may on the surface seem counter-intuitive. To do less. More specifically to be mindful, to create space to reflect, renew and strengthen.

Leadership is more than just getting stuff done. It takes the capacity to use our minds and hearts well – clarity, perspective, reflexivity and the capacity to connect with oneself and others. This capacity can be developed through training leaders in Emotional Intelligence and the practice of mindfulness. The result is a workplace where people thrive.

Mindful leaders – Developing Emotional Intelligence with Mindfulness

Mindfulness at work has grown significantly over the past decade, following the widely acclaimed Emotional Intelligence and mindfulness programme at Google – ‘Search Inside Yourself’. Daniel Goleman and his colleagues at Harvard Business School are amongst many who have demonstrated the personal and business benefits of developing mindfulness at work amongst which is the capacity for greater focus, problem solving and creativity and increased self-awareness, resilience and emotional control.

At JCA Global, we consider mindfulness a key tool for developing emotional intelligence and our capacity for mindful leadership.
